I've toyed with an MJT build but now we're 1k plus. Happen to stumble upon the Blacktop Jazzmaster and it's exactly what I wanted. See a few for sale for about $750 shipped.

The new Mexican-made Blacktop Jazzmaster looks like a beautiful reissue of a Fender fan favorite. Sometimes though, looks can be deceiving. The Blacktop has more faults than virtues and disappointingly falls far short of its aesthetic expectations. The best part about the guitar, aside from its hot body, is the neck (not surprising for a Fender).

Of course, it isn't that classic player Jazzmaster, it is a Fender Blacktop, which basically means it is a 'hotter' or 'more meant for overdrive'. The Blacktop series was made not to stay, but to keep new products out there for Fender to experiment with. It was also a series to appeal to those looking to use more dirt and such while playing.

The simplest solution would be to replace the bridge pickup with something humbucker sized, that way you're not routing the pickup cavity and/or replacing/modifying the pickguard. There are boatloads of HB sized P90s to choose from, and the GFS Surf 90 is supposed to sound pretty Jazzmaster-y. Link to comment.

Here we are six days later and my Blacktop Jazzmaster arrived. A "Fender" labeled JM for $299 was simply irresistible. My initial impression was that it is light weigh and very resonant unplugged.
